Different Types of Skin

Skin type is determined by beauticians usually on the basis of the surface, feel and texture. However, skin type of a particular person changes with age, external conditions and dietary intake. This article emphasizes on the external cleansing of the facial skin and hence, no dietary advice or instructions will be given. Dietary guidance is best acquired from a registered medical dietician.

Facial skin is one of the most sensitive areas of the body and needs very gentle care. Broadly speaking, skin types are differentiated into the following five categories:

  1. Normal Skin – Normal skin is taut, firm and is neither dry nor oily. The look and feel is just right and healthy. Normal skin has the ability to bounce back against pimples, rashes and spots. Those who possess normal skin can be considered extremely lucky in the skin-o-meter.
  2. Oily Skin – Due to active sebaceous glands in some people, the skin secrets excessive oil on the surface which lends a sticky, shiny look to the skin. Oily skin is prone to pimples as oils deposit on pores and lead to blackheads and white-heads. Squeezing them out can be tempting but has long-term adverse effects of pock-marks and pits. Oily skin, however has one advantage of delaying wrinkles that occur with age.
  3. Dry Skin – Dry skin appears flaky and grainy on the surface on closer look and is usually very sensitive. Daily and appropriate moisturization of dry skin can help reduce wrinkles on skin from appearing. The biggest disadvantage of dry skin is its proneness to wrinkles.
  4. Sensitive Skin – Sensitive skin can be dry or oily, depending upon the skin conditions and immunity of the person. Dry sensitive skin needs medical attention while oily sensitive skin needs to be cleansed properly. In both cases, dandruff needs to be kept at bay as this causes break-outs in the skin.
  5. Combination Skin – The forehead area just above the eyebrows, nose and around the lips is known as the “T”-zone of one’s face. In Combination skin, this zone remains shiny and porous while the rest of the skin in the cheek-area appears relatively normal or sometimes dry.

Here is a step-by-step, easy guide to cleansing skin with readily available ingredients from the kitchen which nourishes the skin as well as cleansing. Preparing these mixtures and packs are easy and will not take more than 5 minutes of your time!

  1. Normal Skin – Mix gram-flour with rose-water and make a thick paste. Add two drops of organic honey to the paste and mix well. Apply on the face and keep it for 15 minutes. Wash it off gently in circular motions with luke-warm water. After towel-drying the face, wipe the skin with ice-cold rose water.
  2. Oily Skin – Take a small bowl with 5 ml of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 5 ml of Rose-water , one tea-spoon of freshly grated cucumber and one drop of honey. Mix the concoction well and apply on your face. Keep on for 30 minutes and wash off with cold water and follow it up with another wash-off with a mild organic, herbal face-wash.
  3. Dry Skin – It is necessary to stimulate the glands on dry skin. Nature’s way of doing it is by using a scrub. Take 1 ½ teaspoon of powdered yellow lentil and make a paste with cream accumulated from boiled and cooled milk. Add 3 teaspoons of potato juice, ½ teaspoon of olive oil and one drop of honey to the mixture and apply on your face. Keep it for 30 minutes and rinse off with like-warm water. Follow up the procedure with a mild, herbal face wash if there is excessive stickiness after the rinse off. If you skin feels taut, make sure you apply a mild, herbal moisturizer on your skin after that.
  4. Sensitive skin – Take 3 teaspoons of freshly grated potato, a drop of organic honey and one teaspoon of freshly grated cucumber. Mix the combination well and apply on your face and keep it for 15 minutes. Wash it off with tepid water to experience a glowing, smooth skin.
  5. Combination Skin – Make a paste with one teaspoon of cream acquired from boiled, cooled milk, grated orange rind and rose water. Mix well and apply and keep on for 15 minutes and then rinse off with tepid water.
